ABOUT US
The Women’s Executive Committee of the Board of Missions for Freedmen, led by Mary Esther Allen, was created in 1884 to help increase support for the school. As Allen noted, the "most permanent progress of a race depended, to a large degree, upon the elevation of its women…" Her efforts to make this women's school a reality inspired the Board of Missions in its decision to name the school Mary Allen Seminary.

Mary Allen College opened in 1886 through the efforts of the Board of Missions for Freedmen and the Presbyterian Church USA.
As a result of their dedication and commitment, educational opportunities were offered to women of African descent throughout East Texas.
The institutional curriculum was based in teaching and home economics The institution existed in the midst of periods of political and financial turmoil for the United States, including both World Wars and the Great Depression. Still, it succeeded in transitioning from a seminary to an accredited two-year junior college and later four- year college
The college would later close at the end of its 1976-1977 academic year.
